Throw out old junk
The fastest and easiest way to find clarity in your life is to take on the physical task of literally throwing away your clutter. A couple weeks ago we started talking to a realtor about the possibility of selling our house and moving to a better school district. In less than 24 hours, he had two people wanting to see our house before it was even on the market. I had to KonMari and clean the crap out of my house because we had so much junk lying around in less than a day. And after that, I almost didn’t even want a bigger house anymore. It was life-affirming. We are still moving though, which brings me to my next tip.
Go on an Adventure
If you have run out of things to de-clutter from your life, go somewhere else! Now, this doesn’t have to mean you buy a new house. It could just mean going on a little trip, or even just going to a different grocery store! Yes, even something as simple as passing the Kroger to go to Publix (or Aldi or Trader Joes) can spark inspiration on something new to cook for dinner, or a brand you’ve been meaning to try, but didn’t want to make a special trip. Go the extra mile and get a change of scenery, no matter how brief.
Change your Appearance
Speaking of changes in scenery, ever secretly dreamed of cutting bangs or rocking a bright pink streak of hair? DO IT! Four years ago, I threw 28 years of platinum blonde away and went a deep sultry red. I. WILL. NEVER. BE. BLONDE. AGAIN. Seriously, it had that big of an impact on my marriage, my job, my friendships, even my diet! I lost 30 pounds (which I gained back in pregnancy), bought some new dresses and generally smiled all the time. All because I finally did something about the ho-hum way I perceived myself.
Make a (Small) Investment
If you love how you look, but still want to take a (small) risk, why not try something else you’ve always wanted to, but were too afraid? Take $500 out of your hefty savings account and invest in the stock market. Or buy that funky chair you absolutely love, but goes with nothing else in your apartment. Spend a little on something frivolous that makes you ridiculously happy.
Learn something new
Finally, a great way to step out of your comfort zone and beat back the boring is to learn something new. This past summer, I watched way too many Jaclyn Hill youtube videos, but now I know how to apply the perfect smoky eyeshadow. I’m still working on winged-liner. My next project on the agenda (after we move, of course) is to take a photography class at my local community college. I already have a BS degree in Political Science, so I will only be concentrating on what brings me joy rather than my grade. You might consider a sewing class (I bought a sewing machine for myself three birthdays ago), or a cooking class (like how to make the perfect croissants), even a watercolor class! Whatever it is, choose something that you think will bring you joy.
