It feels like we just launched Strong Girl Collective last week, but already I’m doing a follow up post on one of our first collaboration posts from our first month back in August. That post, Ride or Die Dupes: Green Skin Care Swap, continues to be very popular and is our 5th most viewed post. So if you haven’t read it yet, pop over to get caught up on why my partners agreed to give up their favorite ride or die skin care products to try something else. After a couple months to try them, these are their results!

Details: I was heartbroken to give up my favorite sunscreen by Elta MD. It took me so long to find a sunscreen that wouldn’t break me out, work well under makeup and not make me greasy. Then my sweet friend Cajun burst my sun-protection bubble by sharing with my just how toxic (8 out of 10) my favorite product was. She suggested a much less toxic (1/10) product: Coola Suncare Mineral Face SPF 30 Sunscreen. I have to admit, I was skeptical to try the matte mineral sunscreen. After trying so many different brands, I was convinced I wouldn’t like it. Boy was I WRONG! This sunscreen is amazing and it is now my new favorite. It goes on so soft and smooth, without leaving any white residue. It keeps my skin matte all day and works well alone or under makeup. It is a little more pricey than my previous pick, but I really do like it better and the fact that it is free of any nasty chemicals is worth paying extra for.
My Roc Retinol eye cream is one of the few creams that noticeably plump up my undereye area and help with fine lines. Again, I was sad to discover it full of toxic ingredients and had a terrible (9/10) score. Cajun suggested from her favorite line, Blissoma’s Bright Eye Revitalizing Nutrient Serum (1/10). Now if you have ever seen Cajun’s skin, you know it is AMAZING… so if she uses it, it must be good. While this serum does noticeably brighten my under eye area, it was not moisturizing enough to replace my night creams altogether. At 37, I need as much moisturizing help I can get. I do use this each day and night UNDER whatever eye cream I am using that day. I cut back on the usage of the “bad” eye cream, but I do still use it occasionally. Baby steps, people. Baby steps.

I was super excited to try out some of the new products… especially after finding out the toxicity levels in the products that I was using. The cleanser that I normally use is the Purity face wash by philosophy. While this is not nearly as bad on the toxic scale as other cleaners, it still wasn’t excellent. The cleanser that Cajun recommend to me was the Blissoma’s Free Rejuvenating Herbal Gel Cleanser. I really love the way that my skin doesn’t feel stripped after using it. I normally use it in the morning, in the shower or after the shower, to just cleanse my face. I have found that trying to wash off a lot of makeup (and I wear A LOT of makeup) with just this cleanser isn’t super effective for me, and I have to wash it twice in order to really get everything off of my face. I would recommend removing most makeup with a makeup removing wipe or something, and then going in with the cleanser to get the traces. So, I still use my previous cleanser, but only at night when I have heavy amounts of makeup on due the day. 50% change isn’t bad:)
As for the moisturizer, replacing my variety of moisturizers that I cycle through with the Acure Organic’s Marula Oil made me pretty nervous. I really love the smell of the product, and that it didn’t leave my skin feeling extremely greasy. However, after trying to use it every day for a few weeks, I realized that it was breaking me out. I still loved the way that it made my skin feel and look healthier and plumper. For the last month, I have taken to using this twice a week, underneath of my night moisture mask and I have been loving the results. It’s all about finding the balance for your skin, right?

I have to admit that while I was willing to try a new product for our post I was really conflicted. I knew I needed to throw away my H2O+ Face Oasis Hydrating Treatment immediately because it scored so high on the toxic scale, but the truth was…I really loved it! But I’m game to try new things, and I’m all about less toxins, so I ordered the Hydraphase Intense Eye Cream from La Roche-Posay and committed to at least trying it for a couple of weeks! The verdict: I’m glad I did! I needed something that was going to make me look, and feel, hydrated all day long…and this did just that exactly. Plus I get to be healthier too!
This post was soooooo much fun for me because I finally got a real life chance to do what I talk about on my own blog, Blooming in Bedlam, every single day. Thank you again to my founders for trusting me to shake up your skin care game! Ok ladies, which product are YOU ready to give up for healthier beauty?
