The holiday season is the most amazing, magical time of the year. So why is it so darn stressful? Gifts, parties, school functions, family traditions… there’s a lot going on. For me, the holidays tend to stress me out since I feel like I need to do EVERYTHING on my own, and I want it done perfectly. Not this year. I have a plan to tackle this holiday so I can enjoy it, without being stressed out. Here are some sanity-saving tips to help you keep your Christmas calm.
How to have a stress-free holiday:
1. Know Your Plan: December is going to fly by, so take a moment to plan it out. Like, tonight. What parties do you have? Will you need hostess gifts? School events? Who would you like to get gifts for that are NOT in your family? (hairdressers, teachers, etc) Write it allllll down. Now that you know exactly how your month will play out, take action and tackle what you can NOW. If you need 3 hostess gifts and 5 teacher gifts, get those gifts early. Put them in a closet and you won’t have to stress out the day before because you don’t have anything. The early bird gets the worm… and fewer grey hairs with the help of planning ahead.
2. Put Down Your Phone: There are so many fun events during the holiday season, remember to put down your phone and actually enjoy them! Watch your kids as they delight in a colorful Christmas light show, with your own eyes… not through your camera phone. Grab a few snaps and then put the phone away. You will be glad you did later. Also, the picture-perfect crafts and Instagram-worthy home decorations can make you feel like maybe you aren’t rocking it yourself this holiday. (which will just add to your stress) Comparison is the thief of joy, so don’t let social media take the jingle out of your bells.
3. Let Yourself Say No: This holiday season give yourself a gift… permission to say “NO.” If you know of a planned activity or event that will stress you out, it is okay to pass. Have a yearly tradition that you are starting to dread? Maybe a family meeting is in order, it could be time to try something new. Room mom calls you to bake 42 cupcakes for tomorrow’s class party? Offer to bring some store bought cookies instead. You can still say no, without being a jerk, and you will feel so much better (& less stressed) when it is all said and done.
4. Ask for Help: If you get overwhelmed, it is okay to ask for help. Even Santa has a gaggle of elves to help him out. Take advantage of free gift wrapping offered at the mall. If you purchased a item that needs to be put together, ask the store if they offer in-store assembly. (many places do) Get a sitter one afternoon, so you can go out and get things done.
5. Be Kind to Yourself: Try to remind yourself what the holidays are really about. It’s not about the gifts or the decorations. You are making memories with your family that will last a lifetime. Try to enjoy yourself and don’t get worked up over unimportant details. Take a yoga class, get your nails done, sneak a few minutes alone to meditate. A little self-care can go a long way in keeping you stress-free.
