There are always new and exciting trends in beauty that come out each year, and more specifically, each season. This year, we have seen some really fun trends in lip products that look really beautiful (or really… unique). Each of the four ladies over here at Strong Girl Collective wanted to try out some of the funky fall lip trends that are out right now.
Mostly, we wanted to do this so that we can tell you whether or not it’s something you have to try for yourself, or something that you can pass on this season.

Fall Lips Trends in Real Life
Lauren here! Since I love black clothing, I was down to try the black lip trend. If you are in to the super daring, really bold, and sultry look, then black/extremely dark lips are for you. This lip trend is not for the faint of heart, but with the right outfit it would be sure to make a statement for a night out on the town, or any given Tuesday afternoon. Totally up to you! I tried 3 colors: true black, navy and purple. As you can see below, they all looked pretty similar. The black color was also shiny and the most “subtle” of the three. I may rock one of these shades for Halloween, but I think that’s where it will stay.
I may also use the black lipstick as a top coat on lighter colors to give it more dimension. The downfall of this trend is that if you have thin lips, it can make them look even thinner. Also, make sure you are careful when applying them because black lipstick on white teeth is not a great look;)
This is one of the most “wearable” of the crazy lip trends. You may have seen every company coming out with a metallic lipstick or liquid lipstick of some kind. There are plenty of options to choose from in terms of color. There are more standard pink/peachy nude metallics, like the Milani Limited Edition Amore Mattallics Lip Creme in Cinemattic Kiss.
Or, you can go for really bold metallics like this true gold number from Kylie Cosmetics. But, I also really love a bold reddish metallic like the Colourpop Ultra Metallic Lip in Kween or Reign, also from Kylie Cosmetics.
You can truly pull off whatever kind of look you want with this. Girls night out lippie, anyone? I will say this, metallics are not the most flattering because they exacerbate all of the lines in your lips like nobody’s business. But, aside from that, they are a super fun lip choice for this season.
Matte Vampy (Deep Berry) Lips:
Cajun here, reporting for matte lipstick duty! I am normally a nude gloss or rosy nude long-wear satin finish lipstick type lady, so when Joanna asked me to step out of the box and try some matte and much darker lip trends for this post, I was hesitant for a couple of reasons. First, it meant I had to take (and share) pictures of myself. Introvert terror aside, I was also afraid that dark and matte lips would play up my somewhat crooked cupid’s bow. I’ve just been used to camouflaging it my whole life with barely-there color and a shiny finish. But in the interest of being strong [see what I did there?] for my fellow founders, I gave it a shot. I tried Ciaté London Liquid Velvet Moisturizing Matte Liquid Lipstick in Pin Up (left photo below) and the Tarte Lippie Lingerie Matte Lip Tint in Whisper (right photo).
The Ciaté Liquid Velvet is easy to apply in that it has a very stiff precision sponge tip (yes, I know how it sounds so no jokes). I basically lined my lips with it and then filled in without using lip liner. The formula is moisturizing and the color is a surprisingly wearable universal berry. I ended up overlining the lower side of my cupid’s bow because the dark shade definitely emphasized the difference. But I was actually really loving the look of a darker shade once that was covered. The dark color emphasized my hair color and fair complexion and it sure raised my husband’s eyebrows, so I felt very vampy to say the least. The only somewhat negative comment I have about this is it does not even remotely stay put (as evidenced by my baby kiss test. 🙂 But, apparently Ciaté makes an economical lip sealer to fix that, which I’m actually adding to my next Sephora order so I can wear this again! OR, you could try this version that seems to have the sealer already built in.
Now, the Tarte Lippie Lingerie is more rosy nude than dark and vampy, but it is still brighter and much bolder than what I usually wear. I decided to try this instead of another dark one because I need a nude lip in my life people! I thought it would be a good way to actually see if I would wear the matte trend beyond this experiment. I’m glad I did break the rules a bit, because I will wear it more. This is more like a giant lip crayon than a true lip stick, but it is still very pigmented and has the advantage of being self-sharpening.
It is slightly less matte than the Ciaté, but actually had more staying power if I blotted it after application. And the color is more day-appropriate. Overall, I am very pleasantly surprised at how much I liked both a deep berry color and a matte finish and feel more confident about stepping outside my usual lip routine. Thanks Joanna
Julie here to talk about glitter lips! When Joanna first asked me to try out the glitter lip trend I was just a little bit hesitant (meaning I was actually a LOT hesitant!) Just doing a quick search of glitter lips on Pinterest had me a little concerned! As I prepared to try out this trend, I kept feeling like I was getting ready to step out on a stage to perform. But I said I would try it so I did.
I have to admit that I had to try several times to feel like I got the look I was trying to achieve. And as you can see from my pictures, it got a little easier once I decided to have some fun with this whole experiment. And I learned a few things along the way…
1) This Hot Pink Lipstick Glitter Set is actually kind of fun…I can’t believe I’m admitting that to y’all!
2) While I don’t see myself using this trend on a daily basis, I actually think glitter lips (with the right color!) would be fun for a girls night out or a special occasion. Because the sparkle is kind of fun and honestly…don’t all girls need just a little more sparkle in their lives?!?
3) It’s a really good thing to step outside of your comfort zone once in a while because that’s how you grow! I didn’t really want to try this, but turns out it was actually a lot of fun and now I have courage to try other new things!
This trend is a little more out there than some of the others. The first song that comes to mind when I see this lip trend happening on other people is “Bring the 80’s back”. It is a little crazy, and you have to wear the right outfit and makeup to pull this off. But, if you do, it could be a really fun statement.
Some colors are more flattering than others in this trend. Like neon yellow lipstick… yellow teeth for days, even though they are a fun and super unique look! But give me a bright neon pink or neon orange… yessssssss!
